What you should bring
It’s completely up to you. There will be NO officials, no official food or water stations, no support, etc. but for safety’s sake it’s recommended you bring the following items with you:
- Common sense and respect for the sea.
- Food and water for two days active paddling
- Tent, sleeping bag and sleeping mattress.
- Clock, watch or GPS to tell the time (important for recording your time)
- Map and compass
- Life vest
- Extra clothes in a waterproof bag.
- Reserve paddle
- Mobile phone in a waterproof holder that you can use during the race.
- Paper and pen (to write down your finish times when you go ashore).
- Self rescue buoyancy aid and pump.
- Plastic bag for waste.
Also, it’s kindly requested that all participants bring a piece of firewood with them to Vallerö to help build the evening campfire.
Other
This race offers no official organisation; all participants are responsible for their own welfare, organisation and methods. If you have any questions then ask them in this thread on Utsidan.se. (it's in Swedish but feel free to ask in english)
The race will not be cancelled in the event of bad weather; neither will the route be changed. All those who participate do so at their own risk, and must use their own discretion as to the conditions if they choose to start or not.
If the wind speed is more than 6−8 m/sec west or southwest, it’s recommended to sneak inside the small islands West of Orust and also maybe on the inside of Bockholmarna just North of Mollösund, since Käringöfjord and Kråksundsgap are not to be played with when the wind blows hard from the West or South.
Look out for the large ships to/from Uddevalla harbour, so keep an extra look out when crossing the fjord. On their website is a timetable showing arrivals and departures.
For those of you who prefer to use Sea charts rather than regular maps, you can use Eniros sjökort online.
Since the event is arranged by the participants themselves, everyone is welcome to offer proposals as to how it can be improved. Write your proposal in this thread on Utsidan.se. The main concept for the event is that anyone should be able to enter, and that ‘less is more’ (keep it simple), without the need for officials or referees, and that the event should be thought of as an adventure where both elite and recreational paddlers get to meet each other and have fun.
